Cuimhneamh - 'Keev new'
|
"Oral history provides a people's history.... It charts the story of those unknown people
who have not before been considered important, people who do not figure in documents
and records.
Cuimhneamh is the name given to the living history project currently undeway in the
South Amrmagh - North Louth - South Monaghan area. The aim of Cuimhneamh is to provide
an extensive and ongoing archive of people's memories and experiences during our recent
history from the early 20th century to the present day. Through audio/visual
interviews, combined with documents and photographs, Cuimhneamh shall provide an oral
history from local people's own perspective, while trying to encourage a wide spectrum
of contributors to share their own life experiences.
The Cuimhneamh committee welcomes everyone who is interested in contributing to the
archive project, either by joining and working with the group or by providing essential materials
such as tape recordings, photographs or documents relevant to our recent history.
Every item will be copied and returned to the owner promtly.
There will shortly be a training programme in oral history interviewing for individuals
or groups wishing to take part. It is hoped that every community in the area can be
representrd in developing Cuimhneamh into a hugely important and informative archive,
accessible by the public whether by internet, book, film or interactive computer media
in a visitor's centre.
